Eddie was panting, big heaving breaths that filled his ears and his mind. He ran, and focused on the sound of his boots on cold tile down the hallways, tinged red with sirens and alarms that rang in the distance and echoed down the halls. He looked around frantically around the empty halls, looking for anything, a person, a monster, a door, a sound…Eddie would welcome any of it.
Unfortunately, Eddie found only empty halls, deep underground…somewhere. He thinks they’re still underneath the mall. He can’t be sure. But he can feel the oppressive nature of the echoes around him, and there was no mistaking that above and around him was only dirt.
Around the building, there were signs here and there, but when Eddie stopped to peer at them, he found they were written in something foreign…definitely Russian. They might as well have been in Chinese for all he could understand of the text.
He stopped and huffed, panicky and frustrated, thinking about Robin somewhere in these halls, too, lost. Eddie thought about the kids, Mike, and Lucas, and Max, and all of them hiding from evil Russians with big guns and no mercy. He ran trembling hands through his sweaty, grimy, frizzy hair, and cursed under his breath.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.” He squeezed his eyes tightly until he could see bright white spots in his vision, and could feel the air prickling the back of his neck, the sweat drip down his forehead, the ringing with a shrill in his eardrum, his dirty t-shirt sticking in places, his vest itching, his rings too tight, his boots heavy, his skin…..
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, stop it, Eddie, focus,” he murmured and yanked his hair in his tight grip.
He looked around. He saw a sign, in Russian, of course, with an arrow pointing left.
“Fuck it,” he mumbled, and took off with renewed energy to his left.
The lights began to flicker. He ran faster.
After what felt like ages of hallway, he found a door. It was just a door, but he’d never been so happy to see a door. It was hidden away, and hard to see from the hall if you weren’t, like Eddie, perhaps desperately looking for a door, for anything. Eddie knew it probably wasn’t an exit, and most likely wouldn’t lead to Robin or the kids, not in this weird hiding place. But probably not a demodog, either. Maybe a storage closet. Maybe it had a weapon? Or a mop. A scooter? Eddie would welcome anything at this point.
Worth a try?
